Stowe house needs your support
World Monuments Fund has already made a big difference at Stowe, supporting the restoration of the Marble Saloon, the Library and other important rooms in the great piano nobile. However, there is still important work to do. In the North Hall, we have completed work on the magnificent ceiling by William Kent, but the rest – walls, decoration, lighting and floors – all require funding. This is the first room to welcome visitors, past and future and so we would also like to reintroduce a huge bronze copy of the famous statue of Laocoön and his sons, which once stood there and was originally acquired from the great Fonthill sale.
In 2016 we supported the painstaking restoration of Francesco Sleter’s 1730-40s masterpiece Fame & Victory above the great East Staircase. During conservation an exciting discovery was made. Hidden under plain layers of later paint are the figures, swags and painted architectural details of a much more elaborate decorative scheme. We would like to uncover more of the scheme to understand its importance and extent, before devising a longer-term plan for its future and need your help.
