Zanzibar’s Story: Remembering the Past, Securing the Future

Facebooktwitter

UK Exhibition

The touring exhibition was created to raise awareness of this internationally significant site and WMFB’s major conservation project to secure its future and promote reconciliation and tolerance in Zanzibar. It tells the story of Christ Church Cathedral, its relationship to the East African Slave Trade and the work WMFB is doing to repair the building and create an education centre at the site to commemorate the abolition of slavery.

The exhibition toured three venues in 2015: The Gallery at 75 Cowcross Street in London, Ely Cathedral and the Centre of African Studies at the University of Cambridge. It finished its run in 2016 at Dr Johnson’s House in London, the home of eighteenth century English writer and lexicographer Dr Samuel Johnson, a prominent opponent of slavery with a keen interest in East African history.
