Annual Mellon Lecture
The UK’s coastal heritage stands as an icon of Britishness. Revered and parodied in equal measure, it has stood the test of time and adapted to suit changes in taste and holiday fashions. But our seaside heritage is facing one of its biggest challenges yet: the impact of climate change. Vulnerable, often poorly maintained coastal structures face increasingly fierce attacks by the elements, and now their long-term future is under threat.
On 5th March 2019 Allan Brodie of Historic England launched his new book ‘The Seafront’ and Carl Carrington from Blackpool Council discussed the impact that climate change was having on Blackpool’s historic piers.
The evening was introduced by Historic England Chairman Sir Laurie Magnus.
